A NEW CHAPTER FOR LA MARQUEUSE

On continuity, the maturation of a brand, and change as its natural consequence, we speak with Urszula Dmowska-Gęsiorek, founder and designer of the brand.

THE OPENING OF A NEW BOUTIQUE IS A SYMBOLIC MOMENT. DO YOU SEE IT MORE AS THE CLOSING OF A CHAPTER OR THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING NEW?

I believe the closest word is continuity. I do not believe in radical ruptures, particularly within a brand that evolves organically over many years. The new boutique is the result of a process of maturity, not merely the aesthetic aspect of it, but internal as well. It is a space that is more conscious, refined of excess, and closer to what La Marqueuse is today.

We did not wish to create a place that “displays” jewellery. What interested me more was the experience: a moment of pause, and a space that supports the jewellery rather than overwhelms it.

THE NEW SALON INTRODUCES A NEW VISUAL IDENTITY AND BRAND DIRECTION. WHAT INSPIRED THIS CHANGE?

It is a natural process. Over the years, La Marqueuse has matured: our sensibility has evolved, as has our way of working, and our awareness of who we are as a brand. The rebranding was not an attempt to create something new, but rather to reveal what had been present from the very beginning, though not always explicitly expressed.

The new visual identity is more minimalist and balanced, leaving space for interpretation. It does not compete with the jewellery; it guides it. It was important to me that the visual language should be an extension of our philosophy: attentiveness, precision, and respect for the material.

A very important part of this process was the collaboration with  Polish artists whose sensibility and way of thinking feel deeply aligned with my own. Tomasz Biskup, responsible for the new logo and the design direction of the website, brought clarity and discipline of form. His approach is rooted in a profound awareness of detail and proportion.

The new boutique was designed by Zofia Wyganowska, who created a space balanced between architecture and silence: a place that does not impose itself, but allows what is essential to resonate. Her approach to space is exceptionally subtle, grounded in light, rhythm, and the relationship with the object.

Maciej Rafalski designed a glass skylight inspired by the raw diamond, an element that introduces, in a direct yet understated way, the idea of light as the foundation of everything we do. It is not merely an architectural detail, but a symbol. A reference to the nature of the material from which we always begin.

These collaborations were profoundly important to me, as they reflect that La Marqueuse is also a dialogue: between craftsmanship, architecture, and design. All these elements converge in one place, forming a coherent and conscious whole.

YOU MENTION RHYTHM, A WORD THAT APPEARS OFTEN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE BRAND.

Because rhythm is fundamental to me. The pace of the contemporary world does not favour attentiveness or quality. At La Marqueuse, we have sought, from the very beginning, to operate differently. Our rhythm emerges from the process itself: from the time required to understand the stone, to develop the most appropriate form for it, and from the hand craftsmanship. This is something that cannot be accelerated without losing its meaning.

IS THAT WHY INDEPENDENCE IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Yes. Independence is a tool that allows us to preserve our own rhythm and to make decisions in alignment with quality and process. We create everything in Poland, from the first encounter with the stone to the final polish, which gives us complete control over the process. But above all, it gives us creative freedom.

In a world that prioritises repetition and scale, your approach stands in clear contrast.

That is true, but it does not stem from a need for opposition. Rather, from a conviction that jewellery can hold a different meaning. For me, it is not a seasonal product. It is something intended to endure: physically, but also emotionally. This is why craftsmanship, and our approach to it, are so essential.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE CRAFTSMANSHIP TODAY?

As a form of responsibility. Every element matters: both visible and unseen. Proportion, weight, the method of setting, and the durability of construction. Craftsmanship is also a relationship with the people who co-create the brand: master jewellers, setters. It is years of experience that cannot be replaced by technology.

BESPOKE COMMISSIONS ARE ONE OF THE PILLARS OF LA MARQUEUSE. WHAT MAKES THEM SO EXCEPTIONAL?

Their beginning. They always start with a conversation, a very attentive one, often long. It is a moment in which we seek to understand not only aesthetics, but also history, emotion, and intention. Only then does the form start to emerge.

AND WHERE DOES THE STONE ENTER THIS PROCESS?

Often, it is the beginning of everything. The stone is the point of departure. It defines the direction of the design: proportions, the colour of gold, and the relationships between elements. One might say that we design "around" the stone, rather than "for" it.

DO YOU EVER REFUSE TO REALISE A PROJECT?

Yes, and I believe it is very important. There are moments when a project ceases to be aligned with what La Marqueuse represents. Our foundation is responsibility towards craftsmanship and respect for the client. If we were to create something that does not preserve this balance, we prefer not to proceed.

HOW DOES YOUR GEMMOLOGICAL EXPERTISE SHAPE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

It gives me greater awareness but also greater humility. The more I know about stones, the more I see how individual they are. Each has its own structure, its own light, its own tension. I travel often to find the one that meets our standards.

The selection of stones is based on years of practice: assessing light, structure, and the proportions of colour within our palette. Yet this experience allows one to perceive something beyond parameters, the moment when a stone reveals its singularity.

YOU MENTIONED LIGHT, A VERY DISTINCTIVE QUALITY OF THE STONES YOU WORK WITH.

Yes, because light is something that is difficult to articulate, and yet it defines everything. It creates depth, character, and  emotion. In certain stones, such as Conch pearls, light arranges itself into a structure we describe as “flames”. It is an extraordinarily subtle phenomenon, yet it is precisely this that determines their uniqueness.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST VALUE OF LA MARQUEUSE FOR YOU TODAY, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?

Trust. The fact that our clients return, and that these relationships often endure across generations. It is something that cannot be planned; it can only be built, step by step. It is also a form of gratitude towards all those who co-create the brand. It marks another stage in a maison that, for nearly twenty years, has remained faithful to its own approach, evolving consistently, at its own pace and on its own terms. We do not follow fluctuations in the market. We build upon values that remain unchanged: craftsmanship, quality, and respect for the material.

The new space is their natural continuation and a new visual expression of La Marqueuse.

BUT IT IS ALSO AN INVITATION.

Into a world where jewellery is not merely an object, but an experience.
