The Stone as the Origin of Form

Form gives structure to jewelry.

Yet before form emerges, there is something more - the stone.

The Stone as the Origin of Form

Form brings order to jewellery.
Yet before form appears, there is another vocal point, from which every design begins with: the stone. Its cut, the arrangement of its facets and its internal structure. The stone itself determines the direction of the work. Design is not the imposition of form, but a response to what already exists.

Before the first sketch is drawn, we observe how light moves within the stone. It reveals its rhythm and proportions, the geometry of the facets, the depth of the crystal and the way it reflects its flashes. Within these reflections it becomes clear whether the stone requires space that allows it to breathe, or rather a frame that brings order to its geometry. Light is the first design instrument. It is a moment of silence within the creative process. The stone is not yet part of the construction, but a source of decisions that will only later take shape as a sketch and a setting.

Selection as an Act of Responsibility

At La Marqueuse, the design process is founded upon the careful selection of stones, a stage that often unfolds over many months. The consideration extends beyond technical parameters to include colour and its place within the brand’s distinctive palette. We select stones whose hues belong naturally to the palette of La Marqueuse: from emeralds in the cool bluish-green tonality, to noble Ceylon sapphires, and the distinctive Lagoon tourmalines. The attention devoted to colour, rarity and character defines the aesthetic language of La Marqueuse.

Prototypes are created, proportions tested, and the relationship between stone and setting analysed, both from an aesthetic perspective and with regard to the long-term durability of the design. One fundamental question guides this stage: Will this piece serve its wearer equally well in ten or thirty years’ time? Not every stone passes the final stage of selection. We work only with natural precious stones that meet our standards of quality and longevity. At La Marqueuse, the act of choosing is inseparable from responsibility: for the material from which jewellery is created, and for its endurance over time.

Physical Properties as the Boundaries of Form

Each stone possesses its own structure, hardness and internal logic. These characteristics define the limits of design. Gemmological analysis allows us to anticipate how a stone will respond to tension, to contact with metal and to the passage of time within a jewel. Certain physical properties may exclude a stone from particular designs. The creative process does not consist in ignoring such limitations, but in understanding them. Form must arise from the material, never the reverse.

Colour as the Organising Principle of Composition

The colour of a stone determines the architecture of the entire composition. It guides the choice of gold alloy as well as the selection of accompanying stones.

At La Marqueuse, chromatic context is essential. Stones are combined so that they reveal one another’s full potential through contrast, closely related tones, or subtle gradations of colour. Even the most delicate shift in colour temperature can determine whether a composition remains coherent and harmonious.

Structural Responsibility

The mass of the stone must also be considered from the perspective of ergonomics and security. A stone of significant size set within a delicate construction may disturb the balance of the design, both visually and technically. Jewellery must be not only beautiful, but above all secure and comfortable to wear. The stone chosen today will become part of someone’s everyday life.

As Urszula Dmowska-Gęsiorek, founder and designer of La Marqueuse, observes:

“The essence of jewellery design lies in responsibility born of creative awareness. Each piece will be worn for years, perhaps even for generations. We design with time in mind. Beauty without responsibility holds no value for us.”

At La Marqueuse, every creation is an attempt to find equilibrium between the nature of the stone and the precision of the human hand. Where these meet in harmony, jewellery comes into being.
