The Story of La Marqueuse

La Marqueuse is a name drawn from the French language, denoting the person who assesses a rough stone before it becomes a piece of jewellery.

It signifies a moment of decision, in which the stone has not yet been assigned a form, and its future depends upon whether someone is able to read its structure, its proportions, and the way it conducts light. It is a role that demands more than technical knowledge: it presupposes the ability to recognise potential, and a sense of responsibility for what will emerge from it.

Twenty years ago, Urszula Dmowska-Gęsiorek came across this term whilst browsing a French jewellery dictionary. At that moment, it was not yet a brand name, but a way of thinking about material and working with it.

La Marqueuse as the brand was born later, with the name becoming a constant reminder of an approach to craftsmanship that remains at the heart of every creation.

The beginning as a decision

The brand was founded in 2006 in Warsaw, following years of experience gained in the jewellery industry. From the very outset, it was the result of a considered decision about a particular way of working.

The stone became the point of departure, and the design process was subordinated to its properties. The selection of material is a fundamental moment in the process: it is here that the structure and proportions are revealed, making it possible to create a form that retains its equilibrium over time. The design thus becomes a process of uncovering the potential held within the material, and of recognising what is already present in it and what may be developed in an enduring way.

The Atelier and the continuity of work

The establishment of the jewellery Atelier was a natural consequence of this approach, as only within such a model was it possible to maintain control over the entire process, from the selection of the stone to its hand-setting.

The jewellery ceased to be an end result and began to function as the outcome of decisions made continuously at each successive stage of work.

An essential element of this continuity is the presence of those who have contributed to the brand over many years. One such figure is Monsieur Bernard, a jeweller who has been part of La Marqueuse for nearly two decades.

Experience forms the foundation of this way of working: it informs decisions, the choice of material, and the manner of its execution.

Form as consequence

The Roses collection, presented ten years ago, was the first fully considered realisation of this approach, in which the principles of working with material were unambiguously translated into form.

The material remained the point of departure, and the form was subordinated to its properties. The rose motif was reduced to what is possible in metal, without excess and without decorative interpretation. In this collection, design decisions and execution began to function as a whole.

From that moment, the design at La Marqueuse has developed within a single logic: as a consequence of the relationship between stone, construction, and form.

Jewellery in time

Jewellery by La Marqueuse is created with a life in mind that extends beyond a single moment. It exists in time, shifting context, passing between people, whilst preserving its structure and meaning.

What endures does so through the quality of decisions made at the outset of the process, in the choice of stone, the building of form, and the attention given to detail. Each of these stages influences the way in which the piece will function in years to come.

Two decades

Two decades of work are not a history of growth in terms of scale, nor of change in direction, but a process of gradual refinement of a single idea, whose essence remains the conviction that jewellery begins with material, and that its value is born from the relationship between stone, form, and time.

Signature in time.

La Marqueuse exists as the consequence of this approach.

La Marqueuse was founded by Urszula Dmowska-Gęsiorek, jewellery designer, appraiser, pearl expert and international HRD diamond expert.

The name is French because behind the brand lies a fascination with French jewellery art – its precision, sense of form and approach to working with stone. At the same time, La Marqueuse remains a Polish brand, rooted in Warsaw.
